Notes on Heavy Sweating - Headaches and ...

Yesterday, while Fantastic Fabiola was senisbly resting in the shade of enormous allergen producing weeds, Mary was working her way towards almost Heat Exhaustion. Oh, Darlings, that wasn't her goal, just a side effect. While Mary is not the brightest creature gracing the face of this earth and more locally, certain farm fields, she does know the warning signs that preceed impending life threatening conditions. Untreated Heat Exhaustion can quickly become Heat Stroke. Heat stroke is a condition that can quickly lead to Death. (You don't need a link to explain that one do you Darlings). Dead is a condition that causes a gal to get rather less work done than maybe she have schedueld for a day, so Mary tries to avoid getting dead.

Despite drinking cold water (16 oz per hour minimum), wearing light colored cotton clothes, and staying in the shade when she wasn't running her machine, temperatures in the upper 80's and high humidity did what heat and humidity do and by 3 Pm the headache started. When Mary started feeling just a tiny bit nauseous it was Inaction time. Inaction? Yep, fire-up the service truck, crank the air conditioning and SIT in the cool air until body temperature comes back down. Nobody can tough out heat exaustion, not even Mary.

Mary did finish the work that she had scheduled for herself for the day and Fabiola made her promise to be more careful today. Heat headaches make a gal scrunch-up her face and at our age, that can only lead to unattractive forehead wrinkles. We must avoid that.

If you are working outside in the heat darlings, be careful won't you?

Hello Darlings!

I, Fantastic Fabiola have been spending the last few days lounging in the shade of giant ragweed while Mary works. Fantastic Fabiola will be sending photos here and there for the next few days.

Is The Moon Half Full .. or Is It Half Empty?

Hello Darlings! Fabiola has been a busy girl the last few days. She has been doin nothing all that productive, just unusual chaos, like chickens gettin' loose and running all over the patio. A gal can chase them all she wants, but all that creates is flyin’ feathers and loud cackling.

Well, that isn't what I, Fantastic Fabiola meant to talk about. It wasn't. The moon tonight, take a moment for yourselves darlings, walk out in the yard barefoot (unless the chickens have been loose, then wear shoes), look up at the sky. Decide, is the Moon Half Full tonight, or is it Half Empty?

Fantastic Fabiola's Heaven is holding a Half Moon that is Half Full.

Dress For Bicycle Riding ... Fabiola Style

An important part of bicycle safety is wearing the correct clothing. Comfort and visibility are important, but I, Fabiola, believe that style is more important than either. Fabiola knows that safety yellow and reflective orange are recommended to increase your visibility to other travelers, but seriously darlings, safety yellow and reflective orange only look good on you if you happen to be a road sign.
Fabiola recommends an outfit that attracts attention while making a fashion statement. Fabiola wears cloud pants and a sunny shirt. Fabiola also urges you to consider wearing a safety helmet, if for no other reason than helmets keep flying insects out of your hair.

You never forget how to ride a bike.

Fabiola Rides Again ...

I, Fabiola, after 26 years, pulled the 2-wheeled Fabiola moblie out of storage. In a moment of triumph - Fabiola managed to ride down the lane and then back.
Yes, yes, Fabiola knows, it was an amazing feat of balance and non motorized mobility. Fabiola had to take a short rest after her adventure. Tomorrow she may go up to almost the edge of the pavement. Calm yourselves! Fabiola will ensure that she is roadworthy before she goes out tying up what little traffic exists on Fabiola's road. Fabiola appologises in advance to fellow travelers for the view from behind that they will be treated to.

Fabiola does the Mojito

Bump bump - da bump bump - da bump bump dity bump. Fabiola had a strange and interesting experience the other day. No, absolutely not, Fabiola did not leap atop a big rock in the middle of a group of dancing people in a weird parody of that one -- moment --- in an otherwise amazing commercial that makes a gal think that the 21 year old son of the owner of the ad agency threw a fit to have a scene added to a commercial that would appeal to ... well 21 year old males and make all women over 30 roll their eyes and laugh. You have no idea what Fabiola is talking about do you?

Fabiola was mowing the other day. She mowed the yard and then she mowed in front of the woods and in the strip beside the road. Now, the area that you mow may be picture perfect fescue but a lot of Fabiola's mowing is whatever happens to grow. In the early spring Fabiola's mowing smells like grass and onion. This time of year mowing smells like grass and mint and pineapple. Pineapple? Yep. There is a wildflower (weed) round these parts that smells citrusy / pineapple when it is crushed (or mowed). Anywho. Fabiola, done with her mowing, late on a Saturday evening, grabbed a bottle of a drink that she wanted to try (entirely because of that great commercial that she mentioned above, Fabiola has to confess) a Mojito.

Fabiola gathered because of the commercial that the drink would taste of mint. What Fabiola did not realize was that a Mojito tastes of mowing. It was the oddest thing. Fabiola thought so anyway. Mint and citrus. Oh, the beverage was delightful and oddly perfect for the situation.

Oh, and Fabiola does not need to remind you to NOT drink and mow. Whirring sharp blades and alcohol do not mix, unless the whirring is going on in a blender.

Now, darlings, Fabiola must confess, she does not have a blender recipe for a Mojito, after mowing it is far simpler to grab a Bacardi silver pre-mixed malt beverage Mojito in a bottle and just twist off the cap. Wonderful, even if it does taste like mowing smells.

If you are more adventurous (and energetic) look at some of these sites.

This song causes Fabiola to cry with joy. It does.

It also helps Fabiola to get the dusting done faster. Patriotism is practiced in many ways my dears.

Happy Thought for Thursday 07-03-08

Variety, it is said, is the spice of life. Fabiola thinks that (if life only gets one spice) really, the spice of life is salt.

Fennel In The Spice Rack

This week seems to have been all Fennel all the time. Today is no exception. Here, sit down, let's chat about fennel seeds shall we?

Italian Sausage would be just plain old sausage without fennel seeds.

Chewing Fennel Seeds works as a mouth freshener.

As Fabiola mentioned in a previous post, fennel seeds (as well as the rest of the fennel plant) calm an upset tummy.

Fennel seed goes well on roast pork.

Ok, even Fabiola is getting a touch bored with fennel.

For something related (but not entirely the same).

The Perfect Pantry - has a wonderful post on the contents of a food writer's spice cupboard. She also contemplates rearranging them into catagories, the last of which is: used for embalming Pharos in aincent Egypt. Fun read! Go!

A Happy Thought For Wednesday

All the things that you truly need to live happy can be found at home with your family and friends,
with God if and wherever he resides in your life...
or at Walmart with 10,000 other people, all of them standing in the aisle you want to go down.

Wednesdom - 07-02-08 On Fennel

Fennel is your friend.

~Fabiola

Fabiola apologizes for quoting herself, but she discovered that precious few words of wisdom have been recorded on the subject of perennial bulb vegetables.

Happy Thoughts Partly Sunny

The Sun is shining.

Fennel is Your Friend

Perhaps you have a wider circle of friends than does Fabiola, in which case Fennel may be a complete stranger. Let the ever gracious Fabiola introduce you.

The Fennel bulb can be eaten raw or cooked, it will give a very slight anise flavor to a salad or can be served as a hot vegetable. Fabiola thinks that steamed fennel with peas or carrots is lovely. Fennel leaves -- feathery and ferny, like dill, are nice on a sandwich.

Fennel calms a churning tummy and -- (Another thing that Fabiola doesn't talk about -- so she will whisper) fennel helps control gas. Now darlings, ... nevermind, Fabiola doesn't want to get the reputation of being a nag.

Fabiola believes that is enough not said.

Fennel also goes well with fish and egg dishes, but mostly, Fabiola just slices it and crunches away.
